Hi All,

I hope you are well 🙂 .  Since our only chance of contact now is through online tools, I had an idea of starting an online Corona English Newsletter, featuring a word of the week. So that we don’t get out of practice 🙂 .

Our first word of the week is CONTAINMENT 🙂

According to the definition, containment means “the action of keeping something harmful under control or within limits.”  For obvious reasons, this is a word which is used on daily basis nowadays in the context of containment of the epidemic.

Take a look at a sample use:

The government adopted strict containment measures to avoid the spread of the virus.
Rząd podjął rygorystyczne środki w celu opanowania (epidemii) aby uniknąć rozprzestrzeniania się wirusa.

The word can also be used as a verb: to contain:

We need to do all we can to contain the epidemic.
Musimy zrobić wszystko co możliwe, aby powstrzymać epidemię.

Boris Johnson says that Great Britain’s tactic for tackling the virus can be summed up in 4 words: ‘contain, delay, research and mitigate’
(opanować, opóźnić, zbadać, minimalizować skutki).

In business, we can use this word in the following contexts:

We need a new cost-containment strategy.
Risk should be contained as soon as possible.
Reinsurance is one of the ways in which a risk can be contained.

Having a good health insurance plan is also an advisable risk-containment strategy.

I hope we all stay healthy and I  encourage all of you to join our online lessons. It’s a unique opportunity to practice conference calls 🙂 .

See you when the epidemic is CONTAINED 🙂 .
